All ProQM inspectors are accredited by NATA for welding and steel fabrication, and our scope of accreditation covers the VicRoads requirements and Australian Standards for welding.

When the structural steel fabricator is awarded the contract to supply the structural steel elements, ProQM is engaged to firstly review their quality management system and ensure that their traceability and Manufacturer’s Data Record (MDR) is populated according to the project requirements. From there, welding procedures and welder qualifications are reviewed and approved, and an inspection schedule is generated based on the program.

During the structural steel fabrication process, ProQM ensures that the welding operator is qualified according to the approved procedures, and that fabrication and welding meet the requirements of various local authorities, project design, and respective Australian standards. ProQM also oversees the Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) during the fabrication process in accordance with Technical Bulletin 46 (TB46).

This testing involves the use of different tools to detect interior defects that can result in welding failure. ProQM uses radiographic testing, to assess the internal structure of the welds, inner fastened voids, and fissures, as well as Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) and ultrasonic testing. Another NDT method used by ProQM in our welding inspections is Eddy’s current testing, which identifies surface flaws that develop due to stress fatigue. Collectively, our advanced techniques will assist in finding preparation, welding, and testing imperfections, including common welding faults such as incomplete penetration, lack of fusion, undercutting, slag inclusions, and porosity.
